Breed Information:

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a rare breed finding new popularity outside of their native France.  They are known as the Epagneul Bleu de Picardie and are the descendents of crossing the French Spaniel with the English and Gordon Setter.

This sporting breed is a medium range pointer for upland game birds; retrievers; and love to work on land as well as water.  They are easy to train, and tend to work closely with their handlers.  They have a natural instinct but not a psycho one!  They do not have the same drive as say a German Shorthair-so this isn’t a dog that will drive you crazy with excess energy or a stubborn, independent attitude.  They are a soft natured dog in an athletic body.

Their beauty, gentle nature and biddability are gaining them a place as a family companion.  They are similar to the popular Golden Retriever but are a smaller, lighter animal with a very affectionate, sensitive manner.  Males tend to mature in the range of 65-75 pounds and females from 50-65 pounds.  Height at the shoulder is 24”-26”.  This is NOT a small dog and is considered a medium sized breed.  In warmer climates they have a very easy care coat that requires minor trimming and a comb through once a week.  In snowy climates they will get a thicker coat that will shed in the Spring.  But they are not densely double coated like a Lab or Golden and won’t shed all year long on a proper diet.  Highly athletic, they absolutely need daily exercise but once those needs are fulfilled, they know how to relax in the home; are easy to live with,  and easier to love. NOT AN APARTMENT OR CONDO DOG!  Need a nice yard.

Blue Picardies love to interact with people and their family and generally get along well with other pets.  They do have a hunting dog’s prey drive and training is necessary to keep them from chasing birds or small animals at will.  They are very connected and love to be a part of things so not a breed to leave home alone all day as it would break their hearts.  They are naturally elegant,  bright and eager, and sweet, sweet, sweet with a little goofiness thrown in to keep you laughing!
